Description:
The client needed to replace a machine that was an integral part of an existing production process but had no available technical documentation. Furthermore, the original equipment supplier no longer manufactured the machine. To overcome this challenge, we performed high-resolution 3D laser scanning from approximately ten scan positions, capturing the machine’s geometry and critical components in detail. Based on the resulting high-quality point cloud, we carried out a reverse engineering process to recreate the machine and develop a detailed design. The final design was used to prepare complete technical documentation, enabling the client to source a contractor capable of manufacturing and commissioning the replacement machine.
Scope of Work:
1. High-Resolution 3D Laser Scanning:
Performed high-resolution 3D laser scanning of the existing production machine.
Captured approximately ten strategically positioned scans to accurately document the machine’s geometry and critical components.
Generated a high-quality point cloud as the primary reference for the reverse engineering process.
2. Reverse Engineering:
Analyzed the point cloud data to reconstruct the existing machine geometry.
Performed reverse engineering to develop a detailed 3D design based on the actual as-built condition of the machine.
3. Detailed 3D Design:
Developed a detailed 3D model of the machine based on the processed scanning data and reverse engineering results.
Used the model as the foundation for the preparation of manufacturing and technical documentation.
4. Technical Documentation:
Prepared technical documentation based on the completed detailed design.
Provided the documentation required by the client to identify and engage a suitable contractor for manufacturing and commissioning the replacement machine.
Key Outcomes:
Reverse Engineered Machine: Recreated the existing machine digitally despite the absence of original technical documentation.
Manufacturing-Ready Design: Developed a detailed 3D design that served as the basis for manufacturing the replacement machine.
Complete Technical Documentation: Delivered the technical documentation required for the client to source a suitable manufacturing contractor.
Successful Machine Replacement: Enabled the client to replace obsolete equipment with a new machine while maintaining the requirements of the existing production process.
This project transformed an undocumented and obsolete production machine into a complete digital and engineering package. Through high-resolution 3D scanning, reverse engineering, detailed 3D modeling, and technical documentation, the client was able to successfully source the manufacturing of a replacement machine while also gaining a complete technical documentation package for future maintenance, modifications, and further engineering activities.
